This famous slogan was first unleashed on the public in 1969 and helped increase tourism to the commonwealth state exponentially. Virginia, the home of the Jamestown Settlement (1607) and eight presidents of the United States, is a state jam packed with historic sites and beautiful beaches. Today I want to talk about a romantic getaway to Colonial Williamsburg.

I have been to Williamsburg three times to date and I always leave wanting to explore deeper into the colonial period of American history. The reenactments and the interpreters and actors dressed up in colonial garb take me back to a mystical time when things were so much easier and yet highly charged.

Imagine strolling the same dusty streets as George Washington, Patrick Henry and Thomas Jefferson. Stop for lunch at the Raleigh Tavern where revolution was a heated topic of discussion.

The classic romantic hotel for your getaway is the Williamsburg Inn and Colonial House. It was built around the same time that the archeological sites of the old town were being restored Williamsburg Inn and opened in 1937. John D. Rockefeller Jr. and his wife had a vision for Colonial Williamsburg. They wanted generations of visitors to experience what it might have been like to live on a colonial plantation. The hotel has played host to international dignitaries and in 1983 it was the site for the first World Economic Conference.

If you and your loved one enjoy a good game of golf Golden Horseshoe Golf Club there are three courses in the vicinity of Colonial Williamsburg. The Golden Horseshoe Golf Club includes the Gold Course designed by Robert Trent Jones Sr. and another designed by his son, Rees Jones.

If books are your undoing one of the largest Barnes & Noble bookstores I have ever been in is located at the end of Duke of Gloucester Street across from the oldest university in North America, The College of William & Mary founded in 1693. The store has two floors and an amazing collection of wonderful books on the history of the surrounding area.

No romantic getaway would be complete without a candlelight dinner. Colonial Williamsburg can provide you with just such a wish. Two restaurants in the area serve up period dishes in a manner fit for President Washington himself.

Powhatan Plantation is one such restaurant. The atmosphere is set around the early 18th century and the food served is prepared as it was back then. Can you imagine maple duck consommé followed by foie gras or apple wood smoked bacon wrapped oysters with smoked quail as your main dish? You can’t help but feel you are a visitor to the south when dining at Powhatan Plantation.

I can personally vouch for dinner at Christina Campbell’s Tavern right in the heart of Downtown Colonial Williamsburg Colonial Williamsburg. The candlelight, hardwood floors and music accompaniment as we dined was spectacular. The food was presented as it would have been centuries ago and every morsel was delicious.

If you and yours are looking for more historic fun Jamestown, the oldest permanent settlement in America, and Yorktown, the site of the final military campaign of the American Revolution, are but minutes away by car.

There are several romantic packages available online for your getaway to Colonial Williamsburg. Valentines Day and Christmas/New Year’s Eve are special times to cuddle up with the one you love. Surf the web, find a long weekend package at the Williamsburg Inn, the best inn in Williamsburg. Just sit back and be pampered by their welcoming staff. You know you want to.

Embrace each other!
